Revving everyone up for a big night, the Dykes on Bikes kicked off the show in style🏍️ The group has a long history: they patrolled Oxford St in the '70s to prevent attacks on gay and lesbian people, and have led the Mardi Gras parade since 1991. Photo by @Mridula_Amin

Singer @Wafiaaa *sent us* with her performance of 'I'm Good' before joining the TikTok group as they had their Taylor Square moment. Traditionally Taylor Sq on Oxford St is where groups take the spotlight. But due to COVID, this moment was recreated at the centre of the SCG.

The most important part of Mardi Gras history: the '78ers. These heroes first marched back in 1978, defying arrests and police brutality to return every year since then. Mardi Gras would not be possible without them. Here's a bit of that history: nitter.lacontrevoie.fr/i/events/1499943…

And finally, headline act @darrenhayes sang an epic medley of Savage Garden hits ✨ A lot has changed since the pop duo first hit fame in the late '90s — frontman Hayes only started to come out as gay after the group disbanded in 2001. 20 years later, there's no holding back 🌈

What's the famous song? 'Don't Rain on My Parade'? Here was the radar at about 10pm Sydney time — with half an hour still to go 😱 (orange and red = not good)

Maybe it was an homage to the Power Rangers, or just the power of science ... But no one seemed more excited to be at Mardi Gras than the big and beautiful brains from the @CSIRO ⚛️💜

@VanessaAmorosi ~absolutely~ knocked it out of the park with a show-stopping performance of Absolutely Everybody 🎤 It's been 23 years since it was first released but our queen didn't miss a beat — she hit that high note and cemented the song as a queer anthem for the ages.

Here's the ABC! Celebrating its 90th birthday this year 🎂 The ABC will broadcast Mardi Gras for the next three years, including Sydney World Pride in 2023. The public broadcaster was also the first to screen Mardi Gras, way back in 1994. Happy 90th! 🥳 📸 @dogbunz

After a stunning Welcome to Country from the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation — the Traditional Custodians of the Sydney region — viewers were also taught a new phrase: 'Naya gili' which means 'we shine' in Gadigal language and is the theme of Mardi Gras 2022 #UnitedWeShine

The rainbow flag flew proudly at the Sydney Cricket Ground where Mardi Gras was held this year 🏳️‍🌈 It was alongside the Australian flag which flew at half-mast to commemorate the life and death of cricket legend Shane Warne, who died suddenly at age 52. @scg Photo by @dogbunz
