...Are Sword/Shield even open world? I thought they just had a couple big areas.

The Wild Area is an open world within an otherwise linear game, but the developers were quite clear that it would be a step towards real open world. ...And here we are.

Reading more about it, it does sound like they're trying to make it a full open world. 馃槩 I'd prefer something more like Arceus if they want to go in that direction.
