Which opera would you recommend for someone new to opera?

No Mozart. The music of Wagner is actually more accessible than some have been led to believe, because of the similiarities fiom music ahares with his music. I would reccomend seeing a Cavalleria (short & sharp), and listening to Die Walküre at one's leisure.

Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten: more relatable story for modern tastes (working-class drama / unforgiving power of nature) than much 18/19th century opera + I get goosebumps just imagining the 'moonlight' sea interlude among other bits

I was 8 when I went to my first opera....in east Berlin Hänsel und Gretel My next one was Otello!i was 10. Then came madame butterfly,and then Salome,and then came Wagner!never looked back! I just love opera......
